I have just been chatting with my son about the performance on Saturday and had to put him right. Now it’s the turn of the rest of the younger generation calling for Matt Taylor’s head.
Those of us of a certain age will have attended games when we scored an early goal and then perhaps another and suddenly we become a great team receiving all the plaudits going. Had we missed that early chance and the home team suddenly scored then everything changes and we become a team of donkeys going nowhere .
For certain fans - Success and failure is defined not by all the work you do during the week but by the width of a goal post – whether the first attempt goes in or goes wide. Its completely irrational but a sad fact of life.
Those of us who have attended the games so far have seen the problems.
We look good defensively but are weak in attacking midfield and attack itself . One good signing could transform our season in the same way that JCH did all those years ago or Elliot Anderson or maybe the one good strike like the one that Aaron Collins hit against Oxford United in the cup which seemed to give him self belief and allowed him to score fntastic goals which ultimately got us promotion..
I. of course, am a tactical genius and hope that we will try a fluid attack – without an old style big man up front but relying on the trickery of Mc Cormack, Thomas , Kofi Shaw and Ruel Sotiriou . All look ineffective when the ball is just whacked forward towards the big man and it is no surprise that a well regimented defence that won League2 dealt with it easily . I cant help feeling that Hutchinson will benefit from having players run off him and into space
If nothing else it takes the pressure off Omechere before the lack of goals take away his confidence. The guy needs to have the pressure taken off him so early in his career.
As for us gashead fans – no-one ever said that we were going to be top 6 and if you have allowed yourselves to dream high then you only have yourselves to blame . I do remember fans trying to board a bus at Alfreton however to tell the players what we felt about them and I remember the vitriole at Exeter away when we went a few goals down. “ Who the hell signed Belshaw?” Both seasons ended in promotion.
I am not saying that will happen here – but it has been nice to feel a happy togetherness within the Gas fan network. Do we have to turn so quickly ?
All opinions are my own- who else would want them -CC
