Confucius - he say …

…… or 12 hours later……

I wrote in advance of the Cambridge game and commented towards the end of the piece about my slight disapointment in persisting with an attacking style that did not seem to go along with Matt Taylor’s preferred method of play.

I drafted it before I knew about either of the yesterday’s signings and it kind of shows how quickly things can change.

The previous post talked about a sudden change in goal threat when you get a player in who hits form but now my own perception has changed by the 2 signings who both seem like younger mobile attackers whose physical presence will allow us to play a swifter forward running attacking game - as firstly displayed agains Crewe last year in the cup. That game stuck with me because it showed a glimpse of exciting attacking football in a way that we hadn’t seen for a long time at the Gas. Was this the Matt Taylor team and if so i loved it.

We changed back however because Chris Martin became our only scoring striker and he simply had to be played. He was never going to allow us to press with pace but it was a price we had to pay and he stopped us drifting into the relegation zone. We should be grateful to Chris for that rich vein of form and it seems a little disloyal to suggest that his injury now has forced us to change the way that we play and maybe that will turn out to be a good thing..

Don’t get me wrong , the strikers signed yesterday were obviously on the radar before Chris got injured and so the change towards a more dynamic attacking style was going to happen but now it is almost inevitable.

With a full house of forward playing options we have to believe that at least one of them will start to find the net and if you believe in omens then we only have to look at previous last minute transfer day signings such as JCH and Elliot Anderson to know how well it can work out when a signing appears from nowhere to take us forward.

Lets hope that Confucius got it right when he said “"Study the past if you want to define the future" .
