why so many similar signings?..

As we look to be signing another midfield player , the question is being raised as to whether this is someone we need?

I can’t  help reflecting on how much the game has changed even in the last few years  and the old adage of it being a squad game is truer than ever before. We need 2 in every position and maybe 3 or 4 in certain key areas.

Wing backs for example cover so much more ground than the old full backs used to and the style of football that is now played would not have been possible say 30 years ago . Full backs defended and passed to the winger who attacked . We had one reserve and he came on to cover for injuries.

In the past we had players who were “ undroppable” and who would sulk if they were taken off. The modern player doesn’t seem to think like that and even the stars – with the possible exception of Ronaldo – accept their time on the bench is necessary to keep them fresh rather than suffer burn out playing intensely week in week out.

Even in the lower Leagues  – the strength in depth is greater than we have known in the past and it has been necessary.  Everyone has noticed that players seem to get injured more than they used to and surely that is because more is being  asked of their bodies – whether it be at training or during a match.  Rotation willl take place to keep individuals fresh and fitter.

Tactical substitutions are the norm. We can make 5 changes which allows for an intense pressing game to be played for 90 minutes with strong middle distance runners in midfield rather than the marathon runners of the past. Many players plan to be only on the pitch for 60 or even 30 minutes.

Older players can be protected and I suspect that Ward and Hunt in particular will be protected from the day to day rigour of 2 games in a week. Martin will be used more sporadically.

It means that Bristol Rovers will be able to play the type of game that would have been unthinkable just 2 years ago. Players will not sit in position but will press forward at the right time and commit in numbers .

Players will be fresh and good spirited competition is vital if that type of game is going to be maintained.

So yes – maybe we do need another defensive midfield player. we also need a striker but that as another story for another day..

All opinions are my own . CC
